Getting video conferencing work between a Mac using iChat and a PC with AOL 9.0 or latest AIM client can steal ones nerves pretty easily Most times the problem comes up if the PC is running behind a (DSL) router or firewall.
The following steps helped me to get it work on every PC using Windows XP so far:
- Install latest AIM client or use AOL 9.0 or higher
Update: The latest AIM versions (e.g. “Triton”) do not work with iChat, instead get the last working version here: ftp.newaol.com/aimgen/73010/Install_AIM_5.9.3861.exe
- Install AIM RTC1.2 extension
- Activate Windows XP Universal Plug and Play service
If the service is not available, you have to install the Windows XP network component “Universal Plug and Play” and activate the services “SSDP Search service” and “Universal Plug and Play host” in the Windows XP computer services program - Next step is to activate uPnP support of the router
After these steps it should be possible to use video conferencing between a PC and a Mac. Sometimes the connection request still fails, just try it some times. Never had to try more than 5 times to establish a connection.
Have fun chatting

What does the aimrtc12.exe file do? My Dad and I seem to have gotten it to work without it. All-be-it at only 3.1 frames per second.
@Brad: It installs a runtime environment needed for the video feature, maybe this is already installed on newer Windows releases.
As far as I remember the frames per second where never really good on AIM side. Trillian was better on that, but it is no freeware when using the video feature.
Yes its a runtime enviornment embedded with java application.I’ve trillian it has some memory leak issue.I hope in new version they will fix this issue related to memory.
