Well, I must say I am impressed! Got over 100 (!!) emails and only one of them was lets say “not polite”. According to STE Packing server statistics – thanks STE for hosting my and so many other iPhone applications – I got 61,675 downloads. We are not sure if this number is for real, but if it was even a tenth out of that, I would be more than happy. Thank you!
So what did people write and what is new?
These are the top questions I got:
- Where do I find new images?
- Can I access password protected images?
- How do I find out a URL of a webcam?
- I found a flash based webcam, can I add it?
Oh, why do people click in the About screen on my email address, mail comes up and they send it without any further comment? What do you think, how many of these emails do I get? 1, 5, 10? About 40!
Well, for question 4 I cannot really help, since Flash, Motion-JPEG and Java are not supported by the iPhone (yet). So that is a no-go. Regarding question 3 I added some more information into the FAQ on my project page. I have some ideas on how to enhance it in a user friendly way, but sadly nothing to show or announce yet. But what about question 1 and 2? Well, I did some enhancements there 
So what’s new?
- Assign a username and password to a location (supports basic HTTP authentication)
- Search for locations on my database (about 200 mostly german locations available, growing…)
- Random search will show a random list of locations out of the database
- Upload your own location to the database (only possible if username and password are empty). These will be accessable via the search function once they got approved (by me).
- German language support
And what’s fixed?
- Keyboard issues (wrong autocorrection mode, etc.)
- Scaling issues (wrong image proportions in some cases)
- Huge memory leak fixed which caused crashes (some smaller ones still left)
- Fixes for 1.1.3 compatibility (not tested)
- Lots of minor fixes
The new version will be available via Installer and the STE package source. Do you have another request or bug? Please feel free to add them to the Locations Google Project page. An project overview can be found on my project page.

very good program and the updates included in the latest upgrade are great. not sure if this is a known or common issue, but when I hit the refresh button on the main page, it says it doesnt see a wifi network. when the images are refreshed in the full view mode, it gives no error message but doesnt provide an updated image either. just thought I’d mention this.

can you add a FAQ (frequently asked questions) to your website somewhere or to your google code page.
Anyway, my question is,
“Why would you want to assign a username and password to a location?”
Is it because you my have a private webcam? and you want to password protect the location from all the millions of iphone users?
Or is it because some webcams require a log in?
I like how You personally have to verify locations before they get added to the server.
You have “an eye” for good locations, unlike some webcams, which are awful.
Please add a very good one for Los Angeles, CA, USA! Maybe one on the west side, and one on the east side of the city. I hope the smog doesn’t mess up the web-cam image!

it would be nice to browse via random search by a representative still image, so we can know what the location is like before selecting it…
Or a way to browse the images on a website before selecting.

I’d tried to upload some west coast cali urls but got an error message. I tried again after a few minutes and now get a message stating that the urls are already present in the database.

Its not working for me with 1.1.3 JB, anyone with the same problem? (It takes to a black screen, and then it returns to the ipod main screen )

- it seems that the itunes music store function I use to detect if a wifi network is available isn’t working for you. I don’t have an iPod touch myself so I cannot test, someone willing to help/run tests from ssh? Please contact me, need to have iChat/AIM/Skype!
- is only 1.1.3 affected or also 1.1.2 etc?

- Username/password helps if you want to access images that are access restricted.
- Anybody can upload their own locations to the server when the “Upload” button appears (does not appear when username/password are not empty).
- Regarding the very good webcam images, I would need the URLs to add them or you Uploading them
@alouis: ich kann es leider nicht test/nachvollziehen. Eigentlich habe ich harcdcodieren Pfade entfernt und er geht automatisch auf /var/mobile oder /var/root.
@ron: Once you upload an URL I have to approve it in my database until it is available. You got a message box saying this on success, or another on failure

@tk: forgot the question about “most popular images”. Well, I cannot say, since I do not and do not want to track which URLs are added by you all.
what about a voting system on the website? where people could come to your website and rate different images that are uploaded.

On the server, it does not say ‘California’ so people who search California, will not find this.
I think you should ask people to submit in a specific format.
Name of location, city, state/province, country
I have noticed some of the recent California, USA entries did not have the state (California) added in the name so it is hard for other users to search for them.
I believe there are google mashups that have nearly every webcam online listed.

I am strangely having the same problem as poster number 11. Black screen and gets booted out to desktop. I suspect a permission setting or somethi g like that as it used to work with Nate’s jailbreak but with the devteam’s official release I am having this problem. Help!

Same issue with black screen, and kicked back to desktop. Worked initially for a couple times after initial install, but not since. Have uninstalled and reinstalled with no luck either.
@tk – Ok that was me uploading the California urls all haphazardly. I was getting error messages on each attempt, so I didn’t think they were going through. Any urls I submit in the future, and I will be submitting more, will be in a suitable format. =)
@andreas – each time I try to up an url it still advises that the attempt failed. But I just keep doing it until it advises me that the url is already on the server. No big, but that’s my workaround. =)

@tk: changed the text of the url. regarding voting: my own database shouldn’t be the final solution, just a first step. I am looking for a webcam site to get access to and use their features via an API.
Regarding the naming convention: had the same idea, will add it into the bugfix release.

chmod -R a+rw /var/root/*

Does this app need rw permissions in those folders in /var/root/ somehow? Maybe that’s why it refused to start up..?
Anyway I did that, uninstall and reinstalled it again and it worked.
My wishlist : someone need to make a package that auto-adds all the scenic views…categorised by country or subject or something like that

leider funktioniert LOCATIONS bei meinem 1.1.3 US iphone nicht… wenn ich das programm aufrufe, bleibt der bildschirm schwarz und dann springt es wieder auf das springboard zurück.

The locations you add are all stored in /var/root/Library/Locations/ or /var/mobile/Library/Locations/ in 1.1.3 (The API will give me the user home which I use, and hopefully gives me the correct one). So if /var/yyy/Library/ is not writable, then the app won’t work.
If all of you are experiencing that problem, it is no fault of Locations, but of the 1.1.3 Jailbreak

Great App …. BUT it is not working with 1.1.3:
Unfortunately dir permissions are not the issue with 1.1.3 .
The directory “Locations” is created correctly.
There is no difference between user mobile or root because everything within mobile directory is softlink from root.
If I delete the folder Locations manually the App is re-creating a new one in the correct folder with all required permissions.
I have had change UID and set the folder to 777 without success
Any other idea how to solve this issue with 1.1.3 ?

I have a 1.1.2 iphone. Locations was working fine until I updated it to v0.2.0
I can’t start the app anymore. The screen just gies black and goes back to homescreen.
Tried uninstalling and reinstalling but it did not resolve the problem.
In my opinion its the best ipod/iphone app available, because its amazing to view so many places all over the world.
ive tested both 0.1 and 0.2 on a jailbreaked ipod touch with 1.1.1 on it.
only issue:
on 0.2 the “refresh” on the main-screen brings up an wifi-error, but refreshing single webcams (while watching them) works perfect.
this is one of the best programs i have for my iphone!! its simply great !! lying in bed at night and watching cams all over the world! thanks!!
just a little problem i have on my 1.1.2 :
i have added like 25 new webcams. now, when starting the program it takes ages till it starts. in most cases it does not even start but goes back to the summerboard after 15 minutes waiting and staring at the “Loading” icon.
it would be fine to know how many cams i could add without having to wait too long or without even the program crashing.
my experience is that with more than around 20 cams it will take too long, or even wont work at all.
besides that, everything is just perfect!!

@ChammX: I found the issue, 1.1.3 has a problem with a line of code which is perfectly fine. Will rewrite have to rewrite it (not that big issue).
@oleg: 1.0.2 compatibility was broken by my mistake, implemented WiFi detection depending on a iTunes music store function. But since this is not working on an iPod correctly and most people don’t care anyway, I will remove this and it should be 1.0.2 compatible again.
@Lyle: I developed on 1.1.2 and it was fine there. But it seems you have the same issue as all 1.1.3 users. Will be fixed shortly.

@sammy: Thanks! But your issue is very very weired. I have 32 locations without any issue, Startup takes some time, will hopefully be improved in later versions. Would be interesting to see the log output. If you are able to start Locations from SSH please do so and send me the complete log (copy & paste or pipe the output) of such a long time taking run via email.

Hi, Is Locations v0.2.0 avaliable yet, or is it still underdevelopment?
I had the earlier version working great with the ipod touch v1.1.2 but like other I can’t get it to work with 1.1.3 yet.
I like the idea of a searchable database, and being able to upload urls of interesting webcams to a common database.

just a suggestion for a future release, how about a play button which automatic reload the image for example every 3 seconds or you can set the time in the settings
