I have a new version of my iPhone application “Locations” read, which introduces lots of big and small changes and enhancements :-)

This is in the air:

  • Compatible with iPhone >= 1.0.2 (tested 1.0.2 and 1.1.3), same should go for the iPod touch
  • Enhanced User Interface (e.g. smooth scrolling, but don’t scroll too fast!)
  • Auto update webcam images on startup
  • Save an image, send it via eMail or set it as wallpaper
  • Preview a webcam in search
  • Page through the search results
  • Search webcams near your current location! (Might require you to run LocateMe once after each reboot before using this feature in Locations). Thanks to Erica, Saurik and Hisper!
  • Performance enhancements (first run after update will take some time though!)
  • lots of minor bug fixes
  • A big thanks goes to three60guy for lots of testing (with 1.0.2 firmware)!

The new version 0.3.0 is available via Installer.app on STE’s repository (Thank you STE for your work and support!). Please donate to him and also to the developers of iPhone applications you use (even mine). Thank you.

Now, wanna see it? Check out the video after the break and lets here what you think in the comments…

Update: Some users seem to have issues with this release. Mostly iPod Touch 1.1.3 users, one iPhone 1.1.3 user so far. I updated my own iPhone to use ZiPhone with 1.1.3 to have a somewhat identical system to most people out there. But I cannot find anything yet. Whoever has SSH access and wants to help (instant messenger needed!), drop a note. Thank you!

Update 2: Thanks to Kai I was able to run a view test builds on an iPod Touch 1.1.3. But sadly with no result so far. I am getting segmentation fault errors out of nowhere and wasn’t able to find the reason so far. One thing I found out is, when not using threads the app was able to go further, but this is no solution since I need threads in lots of places.
Another problem found is, that if the app works and you scroll a lot (really lot) in widescreen mode, at one point the app crashes. Again, wasn’t able to find the reason yet.
I am hoping for a decent development environment from Apple with debugging possibilities…

I can’t find verison 030 on any sources only 030-1 and as others have reported this version does not work. Just a black screen opens that then quits back to the springboard. Sorry I have never used SSH so can’t help with that.

  2. @Ian: 030-1 is the current one. I did forget to tell STE about needed changes in the uninstall procedure.

    the new features are great
but there is a little bug on ipod touch 1.1.3

you only can start the application after a reboot immediatly before the wi-fi icon shows up. after it shows locations cant be started, the screens remains black

It looks great, but i can only put it to work with the trick above.
Can u try to fix this for 1.1.3 please. cause i love this thing.
    Tks

I agree it looks great, but only works on 1.1.3 with the above trick

  7. So far I have no idea what the iPod Touch 1.1.3 does so different that simple things don’t work. Even though the donations I got so far do not justify it, I ordered an iPod Touch yesterday, lets hope I find a solution and future donations will proove that I did the right thing…

  8. @iPod Touch users: I found the issue (not really a bug in my code, rather seems to be a strange issue with the iPod Touch), solved it, bugfix release is in the works, some more tests needed. Oh, btw, I got my test iPod Touch today, without that I wouldn’t have been possible! So if you like, you can do it like Josef and donate. Thanks!

  9. Awesome app. Best I’ve seen yet for the iPhone. Very clever. Search is killer feature..

  10. Hi Love the app’ Locations, I have installed sloathcam in widgets and am able to add site by opening webcams in there own window and cutting and pasting there address into fields box in URL field.

I have tried this with ‘locations’ however I am getting a long period (Hangs) "Validating" without accepting the location.

Am I doing something wrong? Or does Locations not support individual address’s?

    Can you clarify please.

    the address is"http://212.9.30.37:8080/nphMotionJpeg?Resolution=640×480&Quality=Standard"

Also any chance of a Paypal donation option. I would gladly donate then

    Thanks

  11. Sorry.. Sorry I just tried again and after 15 minutes validating it accepted the location. All up and running.

    Thank you.

Now just sort that PayPal option

  12. @Lloyd00: The first problem is that this url is MotionJPG, which isn’t really supported. That one is sending continuous data and not closing the connection, this is way the checking if the URL is valid is taking so long (maybe I should add a cancel button).

Regarding the Paypal donation: Just scroll up and watch the right column for a button called “Donation” or click the donation button in the about screen in the Location application on your iPhone/iPod Touch.
