Locations

Important: This project is discontinued! The successor application “WorldView” is available in the iTunes AppStore. More information can be found on the buzzworks.de website!

Locations – a native iPhone application to watch webcam images whenever you want and wherever you are.I enjoy using the weather app on the iPhone a lot, but I always felt something is missing. Ok, I can see the forecast with temperature values and an icon illustrating if it is raining, snowing or whatever. But this isn’t enough for me, I want to see how the weather is. Well, there was no app present helping me there, so I decided to start coding it myself. And here it is.

important

Please update to the latest Installer.app! It provides lots of fixes and additions on which also Locations.app will probably depend on in the future. It also helps reducing the server load and amount of traffic of the application repositories. Anyone not updated yet, please do so! Thanks.

installation

The only requirement is to have added the Community Sources in Installer.app. Locations will then appear in the list.

usage

All you need is an image URL. Use the “Add” button to add new webcams, or the “Edit” button to rearrange or delete webcams. The URL will be validated before it is accepted. On startup Locations will load the webcam images from the local cache. If the cache is empty, it will download the default webcams, which is the Statue of Liberty and the Eiffel Tower.
Attention: Downloading webcam images will result in online data traffic using EDGE if you are not connected via WLAN. If you don’t want Locations to cause online data traffic, make sure to disable EDGE in your iPhone.

source code

Locations is Open Source. If you are interested in the code, check it out at the Locations Google Project Page.

to-do

  • Cover Flow Selection
  • Rotating images
  • Switch between images in image view as with iPhone Photo Viewer
  • Add search engine for webcam images
